Ebola can be scary and it is understandable that Allamakee County residents may be concerned a case of Ebola could occur here as it has in other states; however, there is a world of difference between the U.S. and the parts of Africa where Ebola is spreading. The U.S., Iowa and Allamakee County have a strong health care system and public health professionals who handle very contagious illnesses every day, even diseases like Ebola, and are prepared to respond should it become necessary.

Winner of the NuVal Coloring Contest Announced!


Pictured is Breanna Bakke, winner of the NuVal coloring contest sponsored by Veterans Memorial Hospital and Quillins.  NuVal is the new system in place at Quillins to help customers make healthier choices at a quick glance, rating items from 1 to 100 based on their nutritious value.  Breanna’s name was drawn as the winner of the coloring contest awarding her a Quillins gift card and an assorted fruit basket.  All of the entrant’s drawings are on display in the Quillins Food Ranch entrance.

New McKenzie Method helpful with Low Back Pain

Pictured is Veterans Memorial Hospital Physical Therapist Dana Wells, with patient Lori Sylling of Postville, seated.  The staff is now offering a new type of treatment for low back pain called the McKenzie Method.  The McKenzie Method has proven effective in treating several back pain sources and types including back pain with radiating symptoms. This method takes into account several attributing factors including posture and lifestyle and uses repeated movement in a specified direction to decrease symptoms and promote normal range of motion, resulting in an improved quality of life for those with low back pain.



Medicare Part D Check-Up event

Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon will be hosting Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) counselors on November 3 and 4 for a Medicare Part D Check-Up event.   These SHIIP volunteers will be available to meet individually with anyone in the community who wishes to compare the Medicare Part D plans available for 2015.   Appointments are required.  Please call Veterans Memorial Hospital at 568-3411 to schedule your appointment. You will need to bring your Medicare card, current Part D plan card and a list of your medications from your pharmacy.  SHIIP is a free, confidential service of the State of Iowa.
