“Family Wellness Fair” Set for May 13 in Waukon

The 18th annual “Family Wellness Fair” will be held Wednesday, May 13, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon.  Free health testing, exhibits and healthy snacks will all be providing a complete evening of entertainment and education for families of all ages. Everyone in the area communities is welcome to attend this free event, sponsored by Veterans Memorial Hospital.

Veterans Memorial Hospital Diabetes Education Program Earns National Accreditation

The Veterans Memorial Hospital Diabetes Education Self-Management program has renewed their accredited diabetes education program with the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE).  Residents of the Allamakee and northern Clayton county area will continue to have aces to quality diabetes education services.

Veterans Memorial Hospital Staff Strive to Keep Community Safe from the Flu with a 97% Immunization Rate

The staff at Veterans Memorial Hospital has achieved a record 97% flu immunization rate this year.  Nearly every staff member has been vaccinated against the flu by either a flu shot or the flu mist, in an effort to keep themselves and the patients they serve safe from spreading the flu virus this winter.  Pictured from left to right, administering and receiving flu vaccine is Morgan Weymiller, RN; Natalie Kelly, RN; Kelly Deeney, RN; Sheryl Darling-Mooney, RN, Immunization Coordinator; Machelle Bulman, R.N., Infection Control Specialist; and Lindsey Deason, RN.  


You Can Help Prevent Measles in Allamakee County

The United States is currently experiencing a large, multi-state outbreak of measles linked to an amusement park in California. More than 100 people from 14 states in the U.S. (AZ, CA, CO, IL, MI, MN, NE, NY, OR, PA, SD, TX, UT, WA) have been confirmed as having measles. As of now, there are no confirmed measles cases in Iowa.      

The best way to prevent measles is to get the measles-mumps-rubella shot (called MMR). Two doses of MMR will provide more than 99 percent of people lifelong protection against measles.

New You Self-Improvement Class Scheduled for March 11 at VMH

The third “New Year, New You” self improvement class offered at Veterans Memorial Hospital will be held on Wednesday, May 6 at 5:00 p.m.  Jill Fleming, RD/LD, Veterans Memorial Hospital dietitian, will be continuing her 2015 series of six, fun and simple self improvement classes, presenting “Garden, Grow and Get Moving” which will include guest speakers from the Allamakee Extension Office and Allamakee Master Gardeners.
