Surgery, whether planned or unexpected, can be a scary thing. The surgical staff at Veterans Memorial is here to calm those fears by providing an exceptional surgical experience with compassion and expertise, close to home for you and your loved ones.

To meet the needs of the community, we offer a wide range of procedures, both inpatient and outpatient.

General surgery – Dr. Phillip Yee of Gundersen Health Systems provides surgical care on both a scheduled and emergent basis. His partners, Dr. Bierman and Dr. Labelle also provide emergency coverage. Typical procedures offered include:

o C-section
o laparoscopic gallbladder surgery
o hernia repair
o laparoscopic appendectomy
o colonoscopy and gastroscopy.

Ophthalmology –Dr. Cindy Calderon of Gundersen Health Systems performs surgery on a monthly basis, with consultations and follow up done locally at Gundersen Vision Clinic in Waukon.

Orthopedics – Dr. Val Lyons provides orthopedic care, including consultation and surgical procedures. Surgical options include:

o Total joint replacement
o Arthroscopy
o Hardware placement for a variety of fractures
o Soft tissue procedures such as carpal tunnel release, excision of ganglions or Baker’s cysts.

Podiatry – Dr. Greg Valkosky of Gundersen Health Systems provides surgical podiatric care at VMH. This includes a wide range of podiatry procedures, such as:

    • Bunionectomy
    • Joint fusion
    • Ankle fracture repair
    • Soft tissue procedures

PRP-BMC – Dr. Dave Schwartz provides pain management options with Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections and Bone Marrow Concentrate (BMC) injections.
