May is Better Hearing and Speech Month. Pictured is Stephanie Buchheim, the Speech Language Pathologist at Veterans Memorial Hospital. Speech therapists work with all age groups to provide the best communication possible, and early intervention is critical to make the most gains. Some people that benefit from speech therapy include late talkers, children with autism, those with a stutter, people who have had a brain injury, as well as people with cerebral palsy, ALS, Parkinson’s disease, or dementia.

The Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation has set June 18 as the date for their 19th annual Three Person Best-Shot Golf Tournament. The tournament will be held at the Waukon Golf and Country Club beginning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.

Veterans Memorial Hospital has announced they will begin implementing a new cardiac arrest program, responding to the scene of a cardiac arrest and handling the arrest on scene to save precious time spent in transporting the victim to the hospital. The annual “Family Wellness Fair” was held Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Hospital. Nearly 400 individuals attended the wellness fair and enjoyed all the information and activities provided by over 40 agencies and businesses that serve Allamakee County. The “Family Wellness Fair” is held in conjunction with the hospital’s “In Step with VMH” Community Wellness program.

Becky Welper, RN, Discharge Planner and Chemotherapy Coordinator at Veterans Memorial Hospital, received one of the 100 Great Iowa Nurses by the Iowa Hospital Association on May 6 at Veterans Auditorium in Des Moines. Pictured is Becky, with Sharon Baumler, originally of Waukon and the daughter of the late Irenus and Marlene Baumler. Sharon nominated Becky for this award which recognizes outstanding nurses whose exceptional contributions to patients, colleagues and the profession are truly remarkable.

The Laboratory at Veterans Memorial Hospital is now utilizing a new chemistry analyzer machine which allows for many more tests to be performed locally which also allows for much quicker results. In addition, emergency testing time for patients in the ER has also improved.
