Grief Support Group

The local Grief Support Group will begin holding monthly meetings at Veterans Memorial Hospital on Thursday, April 2, from 5-6 pm in the Meditation Healing Center, located just inside the main entrance of the hospital.  Nancy Haberichter will be facilitating the meeting.

This informal meeting is open to anyone suffering from any type of loss whether it be death, divorce, illness or some other grief. Please feel free to attend and bring a friend.  This grief support will continue meeting the first Thursday of each month at Veterans Memorial Hospital.

LifeServe Blood Drive

The LifeServe Blood Center blood drive is held on the first Monday of the month. The LifeServe Blood Center supplies Veterans Memorial Hospital with their blood and blood products. 

Regular blood donors may donate blood as often as every 56 days. First-time donors will find that donating blood is a safe and easy way to save lives and make a difference in the community. One single blood donation can save the lives of up to three sick or injured hospital patients. 

The donation process is simple:

1. Eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of fluids at least four hours prior to donating.
2. Bring proper identification, such as your donor card or driver’s license.
3. Complete a health history questionnaire and screening interview.
4. Receive a brief health check by trained staff. This includes a check of blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and blood iron levels.
5. Sit back while a unit of blood, approximately one pint, is collected. This process takes around 10 minutes.
6. Enjoy refreshments while relaxing for 10-15 minutes before leaving the facility.

The blood that is collected is tested carefully. In fact, all blood that is collected by any blood collection center is all tested the same, according to the federal regulations.

Flu and Covid Shots Begin at VMH Community and Home Care-Allamakee Public Health

Flu and Covid Shots are beginning October 7 at Veterans Memorial Hospital Community and Home Care/Allamakee Public Health.  Flu shots are recommended for all those who have not yet received the vaccine and will be effective throughout the rest of the flu season.

Veterans Memorial Hospital Community and Home Care will be offering flu and Covid shot clinics all Wednesdays in October, including October 7, 14, 21, and 28.   These walk-in clinics will be held from 9-11:30 am at the main entrance of Veterans Memorial Hospital.

Appointments can also be made for afternoon immunizations these same days by calling 563-568-5660.  These afternoon by-appointment vaccines will be administered at the Community and Home Care office located at 12 E. Main Street in downtown Waukon.

Walk-in Flu shot clinics will also be held around Allamakee County on the following days:

• Waterville – Library- Walk in Clinic from 2:00-5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6.
• Lansing- Immaculate Conception Church basement hall - Walk in Clinic from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 12.
• New Albin- Town House- Walk in Clinic from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16.
• Harpers Ferry- Community Center – Walk in Clinic from 9-11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 20.

Medicare does cover the cost of the flu vaccination.  Billing for vaccinations will be completed by the Community and Home Care staff, but participants will need to bring their Medicare number or private insurance card with them.  If insurance does not cover these immunizations, they can be purchased instead.

Diabetes Support Group

The Veterans Memorial Hospital Diabetes Support Group holds a monthly meeting on the third Thursday. The meeting will be held in the hospital's Large Conference Room, located on the lower level of the hospital.

This diabetes class is open to everyone who has diabetes or has a friend or loved one with diabetes.
