Open House Success for New Postville Medical Clinic

Postville, Iowa, celebrated a major milestone in community health care on September 24th with the ribbon cutting ceremony and open house for the new Veterans Memorial Hospital and Clinic Postville Clinic. Over 100 people attended the event which highlighted the community’s support for the new facility and the importance of expanded health care services in Postville and the surrounding area.
The ribbon cutting ceremony, arranged by the Postville Chamber of Commerce, began with remarks from Postville Mayor, Dennis Koenig, who spoke about what the beautiful new clinic means to the community and how it will benefit the town and surrounding area.
The newest physician at VMH, Dr. Olaitan Akinboboye, was also in attendance and shared his enthusiasm for practicing medicine in Postville. After visiting the community, he said he knew he wanted to become part of the close-knit town. Stated it is a great honor and privilege to be part of this celebration, adding, “As a new physician joining this wonderful community, I am truly excited to be part of this important milestone. Since arriving I have been incredibly grateful for the warm welcome by my colleagues and from the general community. I am excited about what we can accomplish together.”
Laura Baxter, Chief Clinical Officer and Beth Shafer, Growth and Development Coordinator, took time to recognize and thank the many people who helped make the new clinic a reality, including clinic employees, local businesses, grant partners, construction workers and individuals who donated to the project.
Baxter and VMH Facilities Manager Dave Martin then officially cut the ribbon. Tours were given throughout the evening and the comment heard again and again by visitors was, “This is beautiful!”
The VMH Postville Clinic then opened for business at this new location on Monday, September 28. The new Postville Clinic is located in the former Upper Explorerland building at 134 West Greene Street, right next door to the old clinic location. The clinic features eight patient-care areas, including five patient rooms, one procedure room and two behavioral health rooms.
The clinic is staffed by eight providers—six in family medicine and two behavioral health nurses. Medical providers consist of Alex Berns, NP; Minji Ranson, NP; Hannah Kelly, NP; Mason Kerian, NP; Katy Maker, NP and Nurse Midwife, and now Dr. Olaitan Akinboboye has joined this team as a physician. He is available to see patients three days per week, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday at the Postville Medical Clinic.
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners, Tara Fink, PMHNP, and Angela Taylor, PMHNP, also provide behavioral health care at the clinic each week.
With the opening of the new clinic and the addition of Dr. Akinboboye, the clinic hours have been expanded to 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The clinic remains open during the noon hour and walk-in appointments are also available.
The Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation set a goal of raising $200,000 to support the project. The Postville community and surrounding area rallied behind the effort, raising more than $211,000. The project also received $52,521 in grants from Black Hills Energy, the McElroy Trust and the Arlin Falck Foundation.
The new Veerans Memorial Hospital Postville Clinic represents a significant investment in the health and future of the community, made possible through the generosity and support of residents, businesses, organizations and health care professionals.
