Arthritis Awareness Month

Arthritis is one of the most common conditions we see at the Veterans Memorial Hospital Clinics. It can cause joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and inflammation that may make everyday activities more difficult.
The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage between the joints gradually wears down over time, often from aging or repetitive “wear and tear.” Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the lining of the joints, leading to pain, swelling, and stiffness.
There are many ways to help manage arthritis symptoms, including lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and eating a balanced diet. Some patients may benefit from supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin, while others may require medications, injections, physical therapy, or even surgery depending on the severity of symptoms.
If you are experiencing an arthritis flare-up, conservative measures such as rest, ice, compression, elevation, and over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or NSAIDs may provide relief. Always discuss treatment options with your healthcare provider to ensure they are safe and appropriate for you.
One of the best ways to help prevent or manage arthritis is to stay active. Aim for at least 30 minutes of movement most days of the week through activities such as walking, biking, hiking, aerobics, strength training, or stretching. Although arthritis is more common as we age, it can affect people of all ages. Sedentary lifestyles and obesity may also increase the risk of joint pain and arthritis over time.
As the warmer weather approaches, it is a great opportunity to get outside, stay active, and take care of both your physical and mental well-being.
If arthritis pain or stiffness is interfering with your daily activities, consider scheduling an appointment with your healthcare provider. At the Veterans Memorial Hospital Clinics, we are here to help you find treatment options that work best for you. Appointments can be made by calling the Waukon Clinic at 563-568-5530 or the Postville Clinic at 563-864-7221.
